Introduction

At AVISU, we are committed to creating and maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all individuals involved in our work. As a national NGO dedicated to empowering vulnerable communities, especially women and youth, we take our responsibility seriously to ensure the protection and well-being of everyone we serve. This safeguarding policy outlines our commitment to safeguarding children, vulnerable adults, and all participants from harm, exploitation, and abuse.

Scope of the Policy

This policy applies to:

  • All AVISU staff and volunteers: Including full-time, part-time, and temporary workers.
  • Partners and contractors: All organizations or individuals working on behalf of AVISU must adhere to our safeguarding standards.
  • Community members and beneficiaries: We ensure that our programs uphold safety for all participants, especially vulnerable individuals.

Key Safeguarding Principles

  1. Empowerment: We empower all individuals, especially women, youth, and children, to understand their rights to safety and protection.
  2. Prevention: AVISU takes proactive steps to prevent abuse and exploitation, including background checks, training, and community education.
  3. Accountability: We hold all members of our organization accountable for their actions, ensuring any breach of this policy is dealt with swiftly and seriously.
  4. Confidentiality: Any reports of safeguarding concerns will be handled with the utmost confidentiality to protect the identity and dignity of those involved.

Safeguarding Code of Conduct

All AVISU staff, volunteers, and partners must:

  • Treat everyone with respect and dignity, regardless of their gender, age, religion, or background.
  • Maintain professional boundaries: Avoid any actions or behaviors that may be interpreted as abusive, exploitative, or inappropriate.
  • Report any safeguarding concerns: If any staff or volunteer witnesses or suspects abuse, they must report it immediately to the Safeguarding Officer.
  • Avoid situations of abuse: Staff and volunteers must not engage in any behavior that can be seen as physical, emotional, or sexual abuse.

Reporting and Responding to Safeguarding Concerns

If there are any concerns about safeguarding, the following steps will be taken:

  1. Report: Any suspected or observed safeguarding issue must be reported immediately to the Safeguarding Officer or designated personnel. Anonymous reports can also be submitted.
  2. Investigation: AVISU will conduct a confidential investigation into the matter. All parties will be treated with fairness, and no assumptions of guilt will be made before a thorough inquiry.
  3. Support: AVISU will offer support to all parties involved, ensuring that victims receive the necessary help and protection.
  4. Action: Appropriate action will be taken depending on the findings, including disciplinary actions or referrals to legal authorities if necessary.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Safeguarding Officer: Responsible for overseeing the implementation of this policy and addressing any safeguarding concerns.
  • Management Team: Ensures that safeguarding policies are integrated into all programs and activities and provides training for staff and volunteers.
  • Staff and Volunteers: Expected to act in accordance with the safeguarding policy and report any violations.

Training and Awareness

AVISU is committed to providing comprehensive safeguarding training to all employees, volunteers, and partners. This training will include:

  • Recognizing signs of abuse: Training staff to identify physical, emotional, and behavioral indicators of abuse.
  • Reporting procedures: Ensuring all personnel know the proper channels for reporting safeguarding concerns.
  • Cultural sensitivity: Promoting understanding of how cultural differences may affect safeguarding concerns and how to approach them respectfully.

Partnerships and Collaboration

We work closely with community leaders, local authorities, and partner organizations to ensure safeguarding practices are upheld. AVISU also ensures that partners and third-party contractors agree to abide by our safeguarding policies as a condition of their work with us.


Monitoring and Review

This safeguarding policy will be reviewed annually to ensure its effectiveness and relevance. AVISU is dedicated to continually improving our safeguarding measures, and feedback from staff, volunteers, and beneficiaries is encouraged to enhance our policies and procedures.
